My 2am past time space“I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.” Ephesians 3:7-10

sick

So it is Sunday and I am not in our Sunday Holiness meeting, obviously.  I am sick - possibly the consequence of stopping off at my buds the other day and hugging two of favorite little guys who were also sick.  Or possibly the end result of a week of Christmas and bell ringer applications where I shared paperwork with a couple of thousand people.  Or possibly the change or weather.  Who knows, who cares.  I thought "hey, at least I can sit in bed and catch up on Facebook or Xanga" but you know what, I really do not feel like it.  I think I will go sit in the recliner with a warm blanket, turn on the news, drift off in and out of sleep between spurts of yelling back at the news commentators for their comments of the upcoming election.  Peace out. :)>-

New Xanga Blogring

Since The Salvation Army Austintown Corps no longer officially exists I thought I would make a blogring for The Salvation Army Youngstown Citadel Corps.  Hope to see you there.

These past couple of weeks have flown by.  We have been very busy trying to move the house, move the corps, keep up with runs to Camp NEOSA, help with Day Camp 5 days a week, run the all day senior program, etc, etc, etc.  There has been a lot of stress with the cleaning and packing side of everything but the transition to the Youngstown Citadel has gone so well with so many positive responses I can be nothing but filled with the joy of the Lord.  I was especially encouraged today by a few things.  First, we had 6 of the 8 girls who went to Music and Arts camp and majored in timbrels perform the timbrel drill during this mornings Holiness Meeting.  As the did the drill for the offeratory I had two other kids who did not major in timbrels pass other timbrels as offering plates.  They were a blessing and even received an encore round of applause after the first round ended.  Although today seemed to be more of a "performance" showing off their newly learned skills I see a wonderful opportunity for them to engage this skill in worship.  Second, after the message the alter was flooded with people for prayer.  Included in that was a couple of people who have had a hard time with the move of the previous officers.  The one, having been in the Army now for several years, came up to me after the meeting and said he wants to become a soldier.  This is a man who has had a very close connection with the Army and had previously chosen not to become one.  I praise God that He chose to use me and the message He gave me to help offer guidance to this individual.

On a different note - having received the tax rebate I felt like a kids in a candy store.  We have already planned on using a portion of it to buy the kids a new computer.  I really wanted to buy the commentary that goes with The Complete Jewish Bible but when I logged online to buy it there were so many other titles that I wanted.  We had not yet used our book grant and so I asked Ivan if he was okay with buying it and he agreed that it would be a worthwhile purchase.  So - here are the new books that I bought that I am sooo excited about and that will probably keep me up everynight for a while:

JPS Tanakh Commentary Collection - 9 Volumes (this is on LOGOS Bible Software and is awesome)

Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel - David Stern

Jewish New Testament Commentary (this is what I originally set out to buy when I found all the others) - David Stern

Gateways to Torah - Rabbi Russell Resnik - speaks about the weekly parashot readings - kind of like a Jewish lectionary  guide

On the Book of the Psalms - Nahum M. Sarna - Exploring the Prayers of Ancient Israel

A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Christ - 5 volume set by Schurer

The Jewish Study Bible Tanakh Translation

Alright, now that I've listed them I am off to cuddle up with Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel.

Goodnight.

Flashbacks / He equips those He calls

Recently I have been thinking about our summer assignment while at the School for Officers Training.  It was an amazing assignment – challenging, but amazing all the same.  We were appointed to the Northwest Ohio Area Services where we spent the summer ministering in 3 corps and an ARC.  The assignments given to us by the area commander were diverse.  On weekdays we spent two weeks running a VBS type program during their existing summer day camp program at each of the three corps.  It was 2004 which was the year of the summer Olympics so flashback number 1 came because this year is also the summer Olympic games and I was thinking about incorporating that idea into our day camp.  On Sunday mornings we lead the meeting and preached at the Toledo Citadel and then went to the Toledo New Hope Corps for the evenings where, again, we lead the meeting and preached.  A couple of the weeks we also went to the North Baltimore Corps for the Sunday morning meeting where we lead the meeting and preached.  On Wednesday evenings we went to the ARC and preached during vespers.  Although the corps were diverse, the neighborhoods diverse, the congregation of three of the four places were not.  The ARC men attended the Citadel for the morning holiness meeting, the New Hope corps for the evening Salvation meeting, and of course, Wednesday evening vespers at the ARC.  Because of this we could never use the same sermon – flashback #2.  Since the Austintown corps is closing after this week and my husband and I will be taking over the Youngstown corps and our people are coming with us we will not be pulling out any old sermons to use to get us through the first few weeks or busy kettle season, etc.  Our congregation member who were in Austintown are coming over to Youngstown so this is not possible.  On to the next flashback – We have had several people ask us if we had any concerns with moving to the Youngstown Citadel and the questions were racially motivated.  I grew up in a southern California and some of my very best friends have been African American so I was a little dumbfounded when I was asked the question.  But it has caused me to think.  I am okay with me being there but will they accept us, especially my "hillbilly" husband? It was a question that hadn’t entered my mind before.  Flashback #3.  Although the congregation at the Toledo corps were the same people who went from one location to another (I wondered who counted them on their stats?) the day camps were reflective of each of the corps neighborhood.  New Hope was predominately inner city African America, the Citadel was inner-city mixed African American and white, and North Baltimore was all white county-bumpkin kids with no shoes.  Our time at each corps location and ministering to all three group plus the ARC men was amazing.  We allowed God to mold our ministry and make it His and in everything we did He was glorified.  Having only been exposed to ministry while leading Sunbeams and Sunday school in Massillon and having a primarily administrative background and also considering my somewhat reserved personality (until I get to know you) I was nervous about how I would do in people-to-people situation.  Ministering in this way in Northwest Ohio Area Services showed us how God could use us wherever we were willing to go.  The flashbacks reminded me of what I already knew – Here I am, Lord – send me.  They will love me because I am just a vessel in which they will get to know Him and He is irresistible (not the T.U.L.I.P. “irresistible” for those fellow Wesleyan-Arminianism teachers of the Word but you know what I mean J).
